Garden registration is quite undemanding

The garden announcement (Atriplex hortensis) growing up to two meters high can be grown as a leafy vegetable in almost any garden bed. The special feature of this relatively undemanding plant is that it is available as a green-leaved, red-leaved and yellow-leaved report. And in some garden specialty stores, a violet-colored variety is now even offered.

Cultivation of garden announcements

From March (until July) you can sow the garden announcement directly outdoors. Although it does not make any great demands on the soil conditions and thrives even in partial shade. However, you should work on nutrient-poor soils beforehand (preferably in autumn) with compost.


You should repeat the sowing several times at intervals of around 3 to 4 weeks, which means that fresh vegetables are always available for a longer period of time and you do not have to process an overly generous harvest at once.

After about 2 weeks, the garden announcement has grown well in most cases, so that you can thin it out with a planting distance of about 15 to 20 centimeters. Or you can thin out the young plants - in about the 4th week - by harvesting.

You should not grow the garden announcement at the same location year after year, but sow it at a different location if possible annually or at least every 3 years. Furthermore, the registration is not suitable as a post-cultivation of beetroot or chard, but you can plant it between potatoes every year.

Maintain the garden announcement


If you provide the garden bills rich in vitamins B and C with a little bit of complete fertilizer from time to time, you can significantly increase the yield.

You should regularly supply garden announcements with water. If possible, water even in the morning and in the evening on hot days! The plants sometimes leave the plants too dry shoot - like leaf salads too.

»Control pests:

The garden announcement is rarely attacked by pests once. Only the mildew (fungal disease) is sometimes a problem for you. Then, however, you must remove the entire plant immediately and dispose of it in the household waste.

If aphids also settle on the garden announcement, you only have to cut off the individually infected leaves and also dispose of them.

Harvest garden log

You can harvest whole young plants (for example, too small seedlings) and process them immediately. With larger plants, however, you should only process the leaves into vegetables and dispose of the woody stems on the compost.

Garden logs, which you have processed like spinach, are ideal for freezing. So you can enjoy the vegetables all winter long. If you only steam the leaves for a short time, they will largely retain their color and only lose a large part of their bitter substances.

Flower and seeds

From the flowering phase, however, you can no longer harvest the garden announcement as a vegetable, but only use it as a decorative vase plant. The red message in particular mutates into a real eye-catcher in the glass.

The flower panicles of the report form the seed for the coming year. You can easily keep it dry during the winter. However, you must then make sure that the seeds are pure. The reports belong to the wind pollinators and can quickly cross each other or multiply uncontrollably in the garden.

Use the garden announcement in the kitchen

  • Gartenmelde is closely related to spinach (also known as Spanish spinach)
  • they also taste similar to spinach, but are milder
  • Young plants (up to 20 cm) are particularly tender and can be eaten raw
  • higher proportion of magnesium and vitamins A and C than with conventional spinach
  • in the case of allergy to goose-foot plants, one should refrain from eating reports

By the way:
If you roast the seeds in a pan or in the oven (approx. 1 hour at 220 to 250 degrees), you can later use them as an extremely tasty spice (also suitable for baking) in numerous dishes.
